What is latex?

Today, always talking about rest, latex is the term used to englobe three terms: sintetic latex, natural latex and talalay latex.

By definition, latex is a stable dispersion or emulsion of polymer microparticles in an aqueous medium. Depending on the origin of the polymer and the specific process applied, we are talking about synthetic latex, natural latex or Talalay latex.

Synthetic latex

Synthetic latex is obtained by an aqueous emulsion of two petroleum components: styrene butadiene rubber (SBR styrene-butadiene rubber).
The processing of this emulsion is exactly like the natural latex (not Talalay) process.

This type of latex is stable in the process of transformation and 100% guarantee that will not cause allergies because, synthetic latex, contains none of the proteins in natural latex.

Natural latex

In contrast, the emulsion polymer used in the natural latex comes from the sap of the Hevea brasiliensis tree, widespread in Asia (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia), Africa (Cameroon) or South America (Brazil).

The milky suspension in water we know as natural latex contains a
specific hydrocarbon mixture of rubber, proteins, organic resins, minerals, water and other chemicals minority. Some of these substances are added at origin to preserve the properties of the material in its transport to processing centers.

The current Spanish legislation allows to label a mattress as natural latex mattress if the percentage of this is equal to or greater than 85% of the total. Understand that some additives are needed for conservation and stability of natural latex.

Talalay latex

Talalay latex is obtained from the natural latex emulsion using the Talalay process or system, invented in 1956 by Joseph Anton Talalay.

All these types of latex are used in the ambit of rest, for the manufacture of cores for mattresses, sheets of padding or pillows.

It is evident that although we speak generically of latex, three types of latex give users a different experience and benefits. The user must find the latex which best suits their needs.
